My attendance last night at a local Toastmaster contest allowed me to meet two longtime colleagues.

On my left is Chris Ford. I first met Chris at a defence course at the Royal Military College, Kingston. Subsequently Chris was promoted General and went on to serve two tours of duty as Commandant of Canadian forces during the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. Beyond his day job, Chris has served as President, Toastmasters International (230,000 members worldwide)! Chris, in his capacity as International President, did my little club the honour of attending our 50th anniversary gala which I had the privilege of being the Master of Ceremonies.

To my right is my old drinking and debate buddy David Chapel. Years ago David and I were given the unenviable challenge of advocating against the feminist movement and thanks to David’s consummately elegant rebuttal…….we won!!!  (Whoda thunk that in today’s politically charged, politically correct times!!)

Both Dave and Chris have been District 61 (Eastern Ontario, Quebec and upstate New York……Toastmasters only bilingual, bi-national district with 220 active clubs!) Speech Contest winners. I would be hard pressed to name two more inspiring people than these guys!!

Congratulations to both Andrew and Peter who did our Capital Toastmasters club proud as participants in the Division D Humourous Speech and Evaluation Contest
