MORE WINTER OWLS

This winter continues to be good for winter owls in Eastern Ontario. Have had the opportunity to meet many new contacts as people have flown in from the States and across the province to take advantage of the many opportunities for winter owls to be found locally here in the Ottawa area.

Boreal Owl

Thanks to a tip from my friend Mike, had the opportunity to recently¬† photograph this cute little character. Typically Boreal owls are buried “in the weeds” so to speak, just like the one above. Thanks to a large telephoto lens and a steady tripod, I was able to pluck this image from the dark¬† gloom of a late winter’s afternoon.

I was able to capture the above image several years ago. What made this such a remarkable photo op was the fact that the bird was uncharacteristically out in the open and was holding a vole in its claws. In print version, this image now graces at least 20 walls of friends and colleagues.

NORTHERN HAWK OWL

Was fortunate to catch this guy “on the hop” so to speak. Check out the deadly talons.
