Today the Queen becomes the longest serving monarch in British history.
Or how the Queen came to celebrate my birthday!! The official ceremony of the opening of the new London City Airport in the Docklands was held on 5 November, 1987. Attended by a couple of thousand select spectators who were serenaded by the London Symphony Orchestra in the foyer down below, the event was a top drawer social occasion. At a distance of a couple of feet from the Queen’s seat, I was the closest person to Her Majesty throughout the ceremony.
At the base of her seat can be seen a piece of tin foil which had fallen off the Queen’s bouquet. During a lull in the proceedings, I stretched out my leg and surreptitiously retrieved it. My mother has it to this day as one of precious keepsakes.
Later that night, bonfires were lit and libations taken the length and breadth of Britain in celebration of both my birth and that other guy……. Guy Fawkes.
The universe had unfolded as it should!!
