Lt. Col Richard Cole, the last Doolittle Raider, has died at age 103. The end of an era. AVE ATQUE VALE!
The suicidal Doolittle Raid used modified Mitchell Bombers launched from an aircraft carrier with no hope of recovery to attack the Japanese mainland after the Pearl Harbor attack. The raid did little physical damage but gave the alliance a much needed psychological boost and the Japanese a foretaste of the terrible destruction to come.
Billy Mitchell is considered by some to be the father of the modern US Air Force. The plaque above honours his connection to Alaska.
