\u00a0The masssive earthquake in Nepal brought back a flood of memories from a hike I did there back in the early seventies. The following images are some legacy photos I took using an old roll film camera. I had only two rolls to support a year long journey round the world and so the “SHOTS” \u00a0had to be extremely limited ( I only have 3 images to show for a week of hitchhiking through Afghanistan!)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"MATCHBOX<\/a>” MATCHBOX” HOTEL, KATHMANDU<\/strong><\/p>\n

Far from a 5 star hotel, the Matchbox was a refuge for serious travellers. \u00a0Did it survive? The Monkey Temple can be seen on the hilltop in the distance.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"MARKET<\/a>\u00a0CENTRAL MARKET, KATHMANDU<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sherpa and Ghurka boys and girls would hump enormous loads of firewood down from the mountains for sale to urban elites. This practice quickly led to massive deforestation in the foothills. On the return journey they would carry similar burdens of modern canned goods back up to the villages above.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"TIBETAN<\/a>\u00a0TIBETAN REFUGEE CAMP, BELOW THE MONKEY TEMPLE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hundreds of Tibetan refugees \u00a0followed their Dalai Lama over the central Himalayas for sanctuary in Nepal. Sad to think that thousands of Nepalis will have to live under canvas once again and face an uncertain future.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"TRADER<\/a>\u00a0TRADER VIC<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last chance for supplies for those trekking up into the Ghosain Kunda!! I traded a raincoat for a traditional Nepalese yak wool jacket which I still have. (see example below).<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"NEPAL<\/a><\/strong>RUDIMENTARY AGRICULTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many of Nepal’ s spectacular valleys are lined with stepped terraces, the work of centuries, so that 10 – 15 foot strips of meagre horizontal land can be put under the plough (here pulled by yaks).\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stepped terraces can be seen on the right. Peaks of the c<\/strong>entral range of the Himalayas can be seen in the distance.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The need is great. Please be generous.<\/strong><\/p>\n
