The official ceremony of the opening of the new London City Airport in the Docklands was held on 5 November, 1987. Attended by a couple of thousand select spectators who were serenaded by the London Symphony Orchestra in the foyer down below, \u00a0the event was a top drawer social occasion. At a distance of a couple of feet from the Queen&#8217;s seat, I was the closest person to Her Majesty throughout the ceremony. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>At the base of her seat can be seen a piece of tin foil which had fallen off the Queen&#8217;s bouquet. During a lull in the proceedings, I stretched out my leg and surreptitiously retrieved it. My mother has it to this day as one of precious keepsakes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Later that night, bonfires were lit and libations taken the length and breadth of Britain in celebration of both my birth and that other guy&#8230;&#8230;.
