\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The Garden is home to one of the largest rose\u00a0 collections in the world with over a hundred varieties.\u00a0 Even had it been the full bloom of summer instead of a bitterly cold Christmas morning, Evelyn would have out shone them all!!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Horrified and shocked, she stopped 30 yards short of the final destination. I could coax her no closer, the air thick with the smell of marijuana! Such was her sense of respect and decorum.\u00a0 She’d have no part of it.\u00a0 I think Jim would have approved. The daughter of a prairie preacher, her high standards were innate!)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Evelyn had a special talent for organization.\u00a0 Tickets for Phantom of the Opera<\/em>,\u00a0 or Buddy<\/em> (where we danced in the aisles) or Les Mis <\/em>(where we danced on the stage)\u00a0or dinner reservations for Langan’s<\/em> or Rules<\/em>. She could do it all.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0I’ll never forget sitting directly in front of Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones<\/em> and watching Peter O’Toole give his final performance on the London stage.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 How she got us front row tickets to Wimbledon Centre Court I’ll never know<\/strong>!\u00a0 \u00a0“You go girl!\u00a0 Well done you!”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0And thanks once again for patiently feigning interest while actress Beryl Reid filled me in on the minutiae of family history. Reids at Culloden!!….who knew??<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Ev’s postings with the Canadian Department of External Affairs included Washington, Ottawa, London, New Delhi and Budapest.\u00a0 A consummate professional, she was highly respected by all her colleagues throughout her career. Her New Delhi lodgings came with 24 hour security.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Evelyn is swamped by young admirers who were fascinated by her natural\u00a0 good looks, easy going nature,\u00a0 fair skin and gorgeous dark blond hair.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“An alien goddess has landed amongst us!!”\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Scottish Road Trip<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Little did I know that these hikes and\u00a0 historical explorations would be our last.\u00a0 I had been to Scotland many times before and wanted to show her around.\u00a0 We spent most of our time on magical, mystical Skye in the northwest highlands after making a mandatory diversion to visit Culloden.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Culloden Cottage<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Culloden Cottage was used as a makeshift nursing station during the Battle of Culloden, 1746, Britain’s last major land battle.\u00a0 My direct ancestor, Francis Reid and his brother William were included by the great “Glenbucket” of legendary Jacobite fame among his 11 Tacksmen who were sworn to order in the historic Peace Bond of 1699.\u00a0 No doubt Glenbucket signed with\u00a0 fingers of\u00a0 one hand crossed behind his back, all too aware of the horrific penalty paid by the MacDonalds of Glencoe for their late declaration but 6 years earlier. For the moment, the Highlanders\u00a0 were keeping their heads down and their powder dry.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Glenbucket and his men were “out” in both the ’15 and ’45 rebellions when all hell broke loose. At Culloden on that fateful day,\u00a0 about 200 Glenbucket men had pride of place to the left of Lord Lewis in the highland line before getting blown to bits by Col. Belford’s excellent cannon.\u00a0 No doubt this hallowed field contains many bits and pieces of my family’s DNA.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0Of all the Jacobites who survived Culloden, perhaps the most famous is\u00a0Simon Fraser of Lovat<\/b>. Born in 1726 the son of one of Scotland’s most infamous Jacobite nobles, he led his clansmen at Culloden in support of Charles Stuart.\u00a0The Lovat Frasers are estimated to have lost about 250 clansmen that same day.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The Glencoe Massacre<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Hiking up to the MacDonald\u2019s hidden \u201cVale of Capture,\u201d last refuge of\u00a0 the\u00a0 desperate survivors of the Glencoe massacre, 13 February 1692.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cLet it be secret\u2026. and sudden!\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 The Glencoe Massacre would rip apart Highland solidarity and leave the feudal society highly vulnerable to all the coming shocks of\u00a0 modernity in the 18th and 19th centuries.\u00a0 It is the key to understanding Scottish history\u00a0 of the last several centuries.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Half Way Point<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0Deep caves line the sides of the steep trail.\u00a0 How the MacDonalds could push cattle up here is beyond belief. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0No doubt theses caves provided shelter to the fleeing massacre victims in the midst of a blinding snow storm as they were pursued from behind.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Despite the strain of the exertion, Evelyn held up well!<\/strong><\/p>\n

“We’ll make a mountain lassie out of this prairie girl yet!!”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Waterfall Rest Stop<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I will build my love\u00a0 a bower,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

By yon clear, crystal fountain.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Wild Mountain Thyme<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Success!! We reach the path’s summit!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 The Glencoe valley floor is far below as Evelyn takes it all in…..the magic, the mystery…the history!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0We had the Vale all to ourselves. It was like being transported a couple of centuries into the past!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Vale of Capture, Glencoe<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 This hidden highland pasture in the sky has only one narrow point of ingress\/egress. Perfect for hiding and grazing stolen cattle.\u00a0\u00a0The isolation and desolation reminded me of some of my hikes on Greenland.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Animal lover, Loch Awe<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Evelyn makes friends with a Shetland pony.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAll creatures great and small\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Animal Attraction<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 And if you thought Ev was going to let a mere fence come between herself and her new found friends, you’d be wrong!!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>ON THE ROAD TO THE ISLES, CASTLE STALKER<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Evelyn patiently endured our frequent stops and allowed me to indulge my passion for\u00a0 photographing\u00a0 crumbling old castles.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The Silver Sands of Morar<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 We stopped to stretch our legs on Morar’s famous beach, which I had visited and crudely sketched years earlier. From here it’s but a hop skip and a jump to Mallaig and the Skye boat ferry. The blue islands of Eigg and Rhum are in sight!<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Bring on the Cuillins!”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Nous y sommes!<\/em>\u00a0 Evelyn relaxes on a remote beach,\u00a0 Isle of Skye<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Despite the bucolic setting, this outing nearly ended in disaster. We hiked out to a point along a rocky shore line against a vertical cliff. Having no knowledge of the rapidity of the turn of\u00a0 local tides, it wasn\u2019t until it was almost too late to retreat. Hopping and skipping on the slippery and rapidly disappearing rocks, we barely made it back to the safety of the shore, sodden, bedraggled and exhausted. We narrowly avoided being swept out to sea.\u00a0It was a close call!!<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Could this have been the point from which Flora MacDonald help spirit the Bonnie Prince back to France? If so, the Jacobite rebellion had nearly claimed two more victims.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Nevertheless it taught us an important lesson. Skye held many secret and hidden dangers!!<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Deep in the<\/strong>\u00a0Cuillins, mountain tarn, Isle of Skye<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cOh, the far Cuillins are puttin\u2019 love on me\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0(Ev\u2019s fellow Saskatchewanian, Bill Millin, was personal piper to Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat in WWII.\u00a0 Lord Lovat learned first hand\u00a0 the lessons of the disasterous Canadian debacle at Dieppe. On D-Day,\u00a0 now Brigadier Lord Lovat, in defiance of “English” orders, had\u00a0 piper Bill proudly march up and down Sword Beach, oblivious to the carnage all about him, playing this and other highland tunes to encourage his fellow Jocks to fight on to victory.\u00a0Prairie born are built tough!\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Ev was no exception!!)<\/strong><\/p>\n

(Another Simon Fraser would be born 30 years after Culloden of a woman who shared Evelyn’s family name. He would become one of\u00a0 western Canada’s greatest explorers with a river and a university named after him. He lies buried but 50 miles from where I presently sit!)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Sheep dog trials, Isle of Skye<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Not a tourist in sight as we crash a remote sheep dog trial.\u00a0 The rustic and ruddy faced locals were a bit overawed by Evelyn’s\u00a0 presence (far right) and grant her pride of place in the impromptu food line. Good to see that highland hospitality towards the outlander still survives!!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Contemplation, Isle of Skye<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0I never saw Evelyn\u00a0 more relaxed and contented than on Skye. It was a marvelous holiday exploring all the island’s nooks and crannies. Skye had worked its magic on both of us.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
