Amongst the torrent of ink that will be spilt I can add only my all too brief personal recollections.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I was fortunate to be in her presence during two summer garden parties out behind the palace and at one Diplomatic Ball\u00a0 in the Buck House ballroom.\u00a0 And yes, I did get to tip my gray top hat to her once at Royal Ascot.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bilyreid.com\/?attachment_id=7267\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7267\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7267\" src=\"http:\/\/bilyreid.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Royal-Ascot-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2842\" height=\"4301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bilyreid.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Royal-Ascot-1-1.jpg 2842w, https:\/\/bilyreid.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Royal-Ascot-1-1-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/bilyreid.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Royal-Ascot-1-1-768x1162.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bilyreid.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Royal-Ascot-1-1-677x1024.jpg 677w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2842px) 100vw, 2842px\" \/><\/a><strong>LADIES DAY, ROYAL ASCOT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(Besides acknowledging the Queen, another thrill that day was getting to talk with American royalty,\u00a0 jockey legend,\u00a0 William Shoemaker, aka &#8220;Willie Da Shoe&#8221;, as I wished him luck and a good ride in the paddock parade!! Sadly, he was only two years from riding a wheelchair for the rest of his shortened life.)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>However my closest encounter with the sovereign came when\u00a0I was fortunate to be the only official Canadian representative at the grand opening of London&#8217;s new inner city airport in the old Docklands, out near my old haunts in the East End. The Queen and I were VIP guests of honour of the airport&#8217;s general contractor, Mowlems.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bilyreid.com\/?attachment_id=7150\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7150\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7150\" src=\"http:\/\/bilyreid.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/queen-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><strong>CHAIRMAN OF MOWLEMS GIVES QEII A FLORAL BOUQUET<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>THE DAY I GAVE THE QUEEN A RIGHT EARFUL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>(and I do mean &#8220;right!!&#8221;)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>November 5, 1987<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Representing the senior Dominion, I was given pride of place to the immediate right from Her Majesty during the official ceremonies.\u00a0 No one in our dignitary line, which was at right angles to the Queen&#8217;s chair,\u00a0 was closer!\u00a0 To my immediate right sat Her Majesty&#8217;s Lady in Waiting, and past her sat several High Commissioners of the Commonwealth. The London Symphony Orchestra serenaded us\u00a0 from the lobby below alongside a few thousand\u00a0 standing guests. I felt that the universe was finally unfolding as it should&#8230;&#8230;<em>after all\u00a0it was my birthday!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ceremonies started with the arrival of the Queen and as she was seated in front of me, the LSO struck up the music to &#8220;God Save the Queen&#8221; and we all rose to sing with gusto. In the excitement of the moment, no one more so than myself!\u00a0 At a distance of\u00a0 about no more than\u00a0 4 feet from my lips to her right ear, I belted out perhaps the worst rendition of that anthem that the Queen had ever heard!! Poor soul! I must have even drowned out the LSO! If she was not amused she did not show it. However she did manage a couple of quick, quizzical glances my way. <em>(&#8220;Like who is this bearded idiot beside me??!!&#8230;.and could someone tell him to pipe down!!&#8221;).\u00a0 <\/em>Thankfully,<em> s<\/em>he graciously\u00a0 and stoically endured my enthusiasm\u00a0 which had\u00a0\u00a0apparently won out over the irritation of my vocal limitations!!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Later the Queen and I\u00a0 were ushered out on to a balcony to watch a flypast of two Canadian deHavilland Dash 7 aircraft, the only plane authorised at that time for the short takeoff and landing restrictions of the new airport. Hence our priority in the overall celebrations.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em> What a way to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day! With the Monarch herself!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Later that night I received an excited phone call from my dear old East End landlady of yesteryear, Ada (<em> a Queen in her own right in my estimation!<\/em>). <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;What were <em>YOU<\/em> doing sitting beside the Queen??&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>(Having personally observed my limitations close up for the better part of a year, she could be\u00a0 forgiven for having had low expectations of my life&#8217;s outcome!)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00a0 The Queen and I had made the BBC nightly news!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(Note the small piece of aluminium foil on the floor which had fallen off the stem of the Queen&#8217;s bouquet. I discreetly picked it up later and it was kept by my mother for several decades until her death last year at 101.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>WE WILL NOT SEE HER LIKE AGAIN!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>WHAT A BEAUTY!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bilyreid.com\/?attachment_id=7220\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7220\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7220\" src=\"http:\/\/bilyreid.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Queen-Elizabeth-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"628\" height=\"777\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bilyreid.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Queen-Elizabeth-1.jpg 628w, https:\/\/bilyreid.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Queen-Elizabeth-1-242x300.jpg 242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>(Let me say it just once more, this time in hushed reverence and far out of royal earshot!!):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>MAY SHE REST IN PEACE!!!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>AVE ATQUE VALE<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE QUEEN IS DEAD!\u00a0 LONG LIVE THE KING!!!
