Great news from the federal government! Camp X, the famous WWII spy school that was the college of knowledge for notables such as Ian Fleming, creator of the greatest franchise in movie history and Wild Bill Donovan, creator of the Office of Strategic Services ( OSS……later the CIA) has been officially recognized by Parks Canada.
I visited Camp X just last week during a visit to nearby Thickson’s Woods, one of the best birding locations in all of southern Ontario. Ian Fleming was an avid bird watcher and would have known Thickson’s well (especially its historic link as a source of white pine masts and spars for the Royal Navy!).
Also last week, I was speechifying in Beach’s Burying Ground, just a mile or two from the Buffalo Canoe Club at Point Abino, Ontario were Wild Bill, a native of Buffalo, New York, spent his youthful summers. This major conflict of interest forced me to miss the Niagara Lands Trust birding event at Point Abino at exactly the same time. They used my image of the Light House in their promotional advertisement, Spring Ephemerals. You can check out the image here. Can’t help thinking that it would have brought back pleasant memories to Old Wild Bill.
Absolutely amazing how all this comes together in just one week!
Don’t you wish we had Ian and old Wild Bill around again? Then again, as certain politicians would have us believe, “WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?”
